Thelma & Louise

These two female protagonists are ingrained in my brain and forever will be. So imprinted are they that when my sister and I were in Utah at Dead Horse Point State Park in 2021, where they filmed the end of the movie, we had to take a picture of us together. A reenactment, you could say. It’s below! This area of Utah is not only a wonder, but imbues one with a sense of complete freedom.

What we love about Thelma and Louise is that they rebel against the patriarchy with grittiness and realness and take control of their fates all the way to the bitter end.

The patriarchy starts the story. They have been let down by their husbands and their boyfriends, the promises of a way life. So they go on a road trip together to get away from it all, but the patriarchy is everywhere they turn. Everywhere they go. The bar. The attempted rape. And then they begin their run from the law, the ultimate symbol of institutional patriarchy. They have no way out. But they still have the strength in them to make that final decision.

To my sister and I, these women are heroines. They control their own destiny.
